In the south aisle, a wall monument to Humfrey Barley, 1571. This is decorated with a shield of arms, Doric columns and a pediment. It has cracked, possibly at the same time as the wall it was mounted on. The inscription is nearly obliterated: lines of dots are the serifs of the lettering. Thoroton has: Here lies Humfrey Barley son and heir of Thomas Barley of Stoke Esquire and Dorothy Meverell, wife of the said Thomas which Thomas was son and heir of George Barley of Stoke, Esq; and Alice (elsewhere called Joan), his wife, one of the daughters and heirs of Richard Illingworth, Esq; This Humfrey was thereby one of the Lords of the Manor of Boney and divers other lands in the counties of Notts. and Derby, and took to wife Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Aden Beresford of Fenny Bentley, in the County of Derby, by whom he had Ursula his daughter and heir. The said Humfrey died the 10th of July, 12 Eliz, (mid 12th year of Q Elizabeth I is 1570) and was buried at his Chappell his own Ile, in Stony Middleton, in Derbyshire. And this Monument erected by the said Elizabeth, now wife of Richard Parkyns, Esq; for a remembrance in perpetuity of the said Humfrey and his progeny. The shield of Arms. Quarterly of eight: 1, Argent three bars wavy sable a chief per pale ermine and gules, in sinister chief a fleur de lis or (Barley). 2, ?Azure on a chief sable a leopards head between four ?roses ( ). 3, Argent a bear sejant erect sable collared muzzled and chained or (Beresford of Fenny Bently). 4, Or three fleurs de lis sable (Bereford, Staffordshire). 5, Per pale argent and sable three roundels counterchanged (Puncheon or Pynson co York ). 6, Argent two arrows in chevron proper between three buglehorns stringed sable ( ). 7, Per chevron argent and or three pheons sable (Hassall, Hanklow and Nantwich, co Chester). (omitting Eyre and Bradburne) 8, Argent a cinquefoil azure on a chief gules a lion passant or (Rolleston of The Ley, co Derby). An esquires helmet visored gules. Mantling of argent and sable. Crest : Out of a tressure argent and sable, Sable a demi stag erect proper armed or (Barley). In the pediment Sable a cinquefoil pierced argent. (Photo Oct 2015).
