In the north aisle, removed from the chancel, is the large and fine monument to Sir Thomas Parkyns, 1741. Designed by himself. The monument is two bays wide. On top is a coat of Arms with Parkyns quartering Cressy. In the left bay is the lifesize figure of Parkyns in wrestling pose. -Artifice status ipse fuit-. In the right bay is a small figure of a man lying on a mat with Father Time standing next, both carved in an honest folk-art manner. -Quem modo travisti longo in certainine Tempus/ Hic Recubat Britonum Clarus in Orbe Pugit/ Iam primum stratus, praetor Te Viverat omnes/ De Te etiam Victor quando Resurgit erit-. Inscription: Here lieth Sir Thomas Parkyns, Baronet, one of his Majestys Justices of the Peace (and Quorum) and Deputie Lieutenant, both of the Counties of Nottingham and Leicester, Second Son of Sir Thomas Parkyns, Baronet, and Anne the Sole Daughter and Heiress of Thomas Cressey of Berkin in the County of York Esquire, whose Ancestors came in with William the Norman. The said Sir Thomas Parkyns Married Elizabeth the Grand-Daughter and Heiress of John Sampson Esquire, Alderman and Citizen of London with whom he had the fee-arm Rent of 274£-02s-08d-1/2 per Annum paid out of the Mannor Borough and Park of Beverley and the Watertown and appurtenances in that County, also the fee-farm Rent of 43£-16s-04d-1/4 issuing out of the Mannor and Castle of Bolsover in the county of Derby. The copies of the Deeds of Purchase are Enrolled in Chancery and in Money about 3,500£. Was Educated at West-minster School and Trinity College in Cambridge, and in Grayes Inns of Court 8 years; who purchased the whole Tythe of Bradmore and part of Keyworth formerly the Duke of Rutlands, Also a Rent of 20 Marks per Annum payable out of the Tythe of Bunney, Also the Mannor and Estate in Ruddington of Sir Thomas Winford Baronet, Also the Mannor and Estate in Est Leake with the Mannors and Count Leets of Cortlingstock, Wysall, Thorpe and Willoughby of the Armstrongs with other Estates in Barrow Super Soar, Gotham and the towns before menceoned. He New Roofed this Chancel, built the Vault and erected this Monument, gave the 2 treble Bells to the Church, Built the School-house and Hospital which the Lady Anne Endowed with 16£ per Annum he Gave to the Poor Widows and Widowers of Bunny and Bradmore, 5£-4s- yearly in Bread to be Distributed every Sunday in Bunney Church, He Built the Mannor Houses in Bunney and East Leake. He Built the Vicarage House and most of the Farm Houses in Bunney and Bradmore, He studied Physick both Gallenick & Paracelsick for the benefit of his Neighbours, had a Competent Knowledge of most part of the Mathematicks, especially Architecture and Hydraulicks and Contriving and Drawing all his Planns without an Architect; He wrote the Progymnasmata, or Cornish Hugg Wrestler, and was buried March the 25th Anno 1741 aged 78 years, He had two Sons by the Said Elizabeth his Wife (viz), Thomas: who was buried September the 21st Anno 1706, aged 19 years, and Sampson who was buried April the 17th 1713, aged 27 years. who had two Sons and two Daughters by Alice his wife (viz) Thomas who died an infant, Thomas; Anne and Hariatt: His Sister Anne Parkyns Spinster gave 200£ for the putting forth poor boys Apprentices in the 3 towns of Bunney, Bradmore and Cortlingstock, was buried August the 8th Anno 1711 aged 39 years.
2nd Inscription: The abovesaid Sir Thomas Parkyns in 1727 married a second Wife, Jane; Eldest Daughter of Mr George Barnard, one of the Alderman of the City of York by whom he had Issue, two Sons and one Daughter; Thomas the present Baronet, and George and Ann now living. She departed this Life August the 27th In the Year of Our Lord 1740 and the 33d Year of her Age-. (Photo Oct 2015).
