Wall monument to Richard Parkyns, d1603. Free stone with relief carved kneeling husband and wife in contemporary dress, facing each other in prayer: he on the left. Behind them in miniature their four sons and four daughters are all kneeling and facing forwards. Inscription: Heare lyeth Richard Parkyns Esquier, Justice of peace and quorum in the Countie of Nottingham and Recorder of the Townes of Leicester and Notts, and an anceyent utter barrester in the inner temple who married and tooke to wief Elizabeth Barlowe then a wydowe, late wief of one Humfrey Barlowe of Stoake in the Countie of Darbie, Esquier deceased, being the eldest daughter of Aden Beresford of Ffenny Bentlye in the said Countie of Darbie, Esquier deceased by whome the said Richard had 8 children, viz 4 sonnes and 4 daughters that is to isie Sir George Parkyns Knight, his sonne and heire, Adryan Parkyns, John Parkyns, Aden Parkyns, Ffraunces Parkyns, Anne Parkyns, Elizabeth Parkyns and Margarett Parkyns, and dyed the Thirde Daie of Julie 1603 Upon whose soule God have mercie-.
No infants in swaddling clothes are shown, so all eight children survived to adulthood. Richard Parkyns took over the ownership of Bunny from Humfrey Barlow by this marriage to his widow.
The Arms surmounting the monument are mostly bare of paint. Shield with quarterly of eight: 1, Or a fess dancetty between six billets ermine (Perkins). 2, Argent a bear sejant erect collared, muzzled and chained or (Beresford). 3, Or three fleurs de lis sable (Bereford). 4 and 7, Argent on a bend sable three crosses bottonee in the centre chief a mullet for difference (Charnock of Leyland co Lancaster). 5, Argent an eagle displayed. On a canton or a fess dancetty between six billets (Parkyns). 6, Per chevron argent and ot three pheons sable (Hassall). 8, Fer fess gules and azure, in the chief a lion passant guardant or and in base a cinquefoil argent (Rolleston). Mantling, an esquires helmet, and a black pineapple crest. (Photo Oct 2015).
