Imdina and Home Croft

GV II

Two houses at right angles to street, facing south. 1840. Smooth rendered,
slate roof. Pair of houses, gable to street, built at same time as adjoining
Philosophical Institute (Kingsland, qv) and looking across its forecourt. Two
storeys and attic; to street a 12-pane sash flanked by blind openings at ground
and first floors, and small lunette to gable with large stack. Central unit is
brought forward from plane of gable, has plinth, two plat bands, and raking
course to gable. Main front is 3+2 windows, large 16-pane sashes to ground
floor and 12-pane above, all framed in plat bands and pilasters and brought
forward c.50 mm from corners. C20 glazed door in bay 2, good C19 6-panel
part-glazed, bay 4. Deep box eaves; two deep ridge stacks. Back similar to
front but without pilasters or bands. Shutters to ground floor windows. A
studied piece of design, not altered externally.
