Former Philosophical Institute, now house. 1840. Smooth rendered, slate roof.
Set well back from road, on a high rubble plinth to the right side because of
slope in land. Front is 2 storeys with pediment, 3 bays; ground floor has
2-light casements with horizontal bars and segmental heads set in sunk panels to
segmental heads in grooved rustication and keystones, flanking heavy Ledolcian
Doric portico with plain frieze and architrave; above a plain string three
2-light casements with transom and horizontal bars are framed by 4 Ionic columns
carrying entablature and pediment. Right return wall is lofty, with 3-bay
frontispiece to tripartite blocking, centre 2-light casement, otherwise blank.
Back is hipped down and has two 16-pane sashes flanking a trompe l'oeil panel,
with a small added lean-to. Large stacks centre to left and right flanks.
Built as group with adjacent pair of houses.
