2 houses, now shops and offices. Mid-C18 - early-C19 with
later alterations and medieval cellar, partly C13. Red brick
in Flemish bond. Welsh-slate roof with deep rendered eaves
cornice and 3 brick stacks, to ends and ridge.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and cellar. 3-window range, central bay
breaking forward, of horned 2/2 plate glass sashes, smaller
and boxed on 2nd floor, all with painted channelled voussoirs
and keystones. Sill-bands, vestigial on ground floor.
Ground floor: on right, canted bay-window with C20
plate-glazing; to left, shallow bay-window having
plate-glazing with decorative mullions and arched heads, deep
up-swept dentilled cornice, and rebuilt brick plinth with
cellar grille; at centre, paired round-arched doorways in
Classical architrave with three 3/4 Doric columns on deep
plinths supporting corniced entablature with triglyph and
paterae frieze, plain fanlights, 6-panel doors, nosed stone
steps; deep moulded plinth.
Left return, visible in side-passage, has some light-scantling
timber-framing.
Rear: brick wing forms courtyard with No.19 (qv).
INTERIOR: at front, below both properties, is an ashlar
tunnel-vaulted basement. In the section below No.21 there are
two arches; a C13 trefoil-headed piscina with deeply-moulded
surround in the south wall; in the central bay, 3 disused
steps leading down from street level with grooves in the
stone; and a 4-centred archway to former newel stair.
