The earliest is a table tomb in the chancel: Nicholas Grene, late C14: Incised cross on marble slab on base with ogee-arched niches. Inscription in French Vous qe par ycy passerez/ Pur l’alms du Nichol Grene priez/ Son Corps gist de south son pere/ Par le Mort qe taunt est fere,/ En la Cynkauntieme an mort luy prist/ Mercy luy fate Jesu Crist Amen. Transliteration You, who here pass by / In charity for Nicholas Green pray/ His body, mirroring in truth his father’s/ By Death who mocks was put here/ In his 50th year he was taken/ May Jesus Christ have mercy on his eternal fate. (Amen translates as May this be so eternally). Translating as a vernacular poem, Stranger, as you pass this scene/ From charity, pray for Nick Green/ His body rather is true to his father/By Death who mocks he’s in this box/ He was only 50 years old/ Jesus have mercy upon his soul/ Amen.
