Early-mid 18th century rectangular, barn converted to 4
dwellings, 1858, architect George Devey. Harl pointed
rubble, ashlar dressings. S facing asymmetrical front
with 1858 projecting wing at SE with 4-centred chamfered
arch entrance and flanking window. Further entrance at
SW and canted porch at W gable. Canted front dormer with
3-light window; further simple gabled rear dormer windows.
Bipartites in ground and 1st floor in E gable, where 2
former barn slit vents survive; similar 1st floor
bipartites at W. Coped ridge and wallhead stacks (tall
at wallhead); slate roofs. Windows mainly boarded up,
though some multi-pane glazing survives.
Building empty and deteriorating. Sutherland estate
papers show that George Devey of London, who in due course
became a well known and prolific country house architect,
travelled to Sutherland in the late 1850's. He did much
to establish the characteristic 'Arts and Crafts' style
Sutherland estate architecture of the 1860's and 70's.
