Terraced houses, now flats. Early to mid C19. Stucco. Roof of
slate. Because these units were designed as a single block,
the following description will treat them as such.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and a 2-storey attic over basement.
9-window range with 4-window range to the return of No.134
where one can find a largely C20 entrance of no distinction.
The centre 3-window ranges of the main elevation are set back
slightly so as to form a 3 bay composition which is
bilaterally symmetrical. The ground floor is rendered as
banded rustication. All the windows are flat arched with
projecting sills. The entrance is on the return. During
conversion into flats, probably sometime in the late C19, a
porch was added to the ground floor. This is supported by 6
cast-iron columns on high socles, the 2 outer columns at
either end being coupled to form narrow end bays.
Floor-to-ceiling first-floor windows open onto the roof of
this porch which is enclosed by cast-iron railings to form a
balcony. Applied to the first and second floors of each outer
bay, or side wing, of the main block are 3 giant pilaster
strips. These are interrupted by a storey band between the
first and second floors. Topping the pilasters is a broad
entablature band. Similar pilaster strips rise again from the
sill band of the first attic storey of the wings and terminate
in an entablature with a projecting cornice. A second set of
pilasters applied to the second attic storey, above which is a
parapet topped by a balustrade. All entablatures and the
storey band are continuous across the recessed central section
and across return.
INTERIOR: not inspected. Walls, piers and railings to entrance
and areas. The design of the block very likely once resembled
Nos 131, 132 and 133 Marine Parade (qv) and the terraces
designed by CA Busby on Portland Place (qv). Included for
group value.
