BRIGHTON

TQ3203NW MARINE PARADE
577-1/48/466 (North side)
13/10/52 No.127
and attached railings

GV II

Mansion flats. c1826. Probably designed by Amon Wilds and
Charles Augustin Busby. Stucco. Roof obscured by parapet.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and 2 attic storeys over basement. Main
elevation 3-window range, left return 5-window range. Narrow
Marine Parade elevation treated as full-height and nearly
full-width segmental bay; banded rustication to ground floor.
First-floor balcony with cast-iron railings. Giant pilastrade
of Composite order, 3 bays in extent, rising from first to
second floors and continuing around the return. The pilasters
are set back slightly from the corner, a device which
emphasizes the height of the block and adds visual strength to
the corner. Set behind the pilastrade is a storey band between
the first and second floors; entablature to pilastrade, the
top fascia of which forms a sill band to the first of 2 attic
storeys. This attic area is divided into bays on the same axis
of the pilastrade below; the attic pilasters are plain,
interrupted by an entablature between the storeys. The effect
is to isolate each attic window in the cell of a 2-dimensional
grid. All windows are flat arched with architraves to the
ground, first, and second floor, pair of corbel blocks support
a projecting sill in top floor. The parapet is treated as a
blind balustrade. The subdivision of the elevation by
pilasters, entablatures and storey bands is repeated on the
return elevation of 5-window range. The 4th bay from the
corner contains the entrance which is flat arched with side-
and overlights and framed by thin Tuscan pilasters and
entablature. This entrance is set under a tetrastyle prostyle
porch, the central gap being wider than the sides, consisting
of Doric columns on socles, entablature with frieze of
laurels, cornice supported by mutules with guttae. First-floor
balcony with cast-iron railings continuous with main
elevation. From the top of this porch rises a full-height
segmental bay with triple, flat-arched windows; giant pilaster
of Composite order framing the bay; wall surface of first and
second floors of bay have banded rustication, windows here
with projecting sills on paired corbels; centre window of bay
in first 2 storeys projects slightly and has a floating
cornice. In the attics, the triple windows are flanked by
rectangular niches. Ground- and first-floor in second-window
range of return are blocked. At the rear of the return there
are 2 closely spaced pilasters instead of one. Short return of
elements to alley behind. Sashes of original design on return
to second and attic floors of bay, and third floor of first
window range. Stacks to end and party walls.
INTERIOR: not inspected. Railings to stairs and areas.
No.127 along with Nos 128-133 (consecutive) and No.133A Marine
Parade (qv) form a most important group with Marine Square and
Portland Place.
