SP43NE ADDERBURY EAST END
1/24 East House
II
Large house. Circa 1770 for the Duke of Buccleuch's agent; probably altered and
extended early/mid C19; extended and partly subdivided into old people's flats
late C20. Marlstone ashlar; Stonesfield-slate and artificial stone-slate roofs
with ashlar stacks. L plan with subsidiary range. 2 storeys plus attic. Regular
6-window front, with plinth, sill bands and a moulded stone cornice, breaks back
slightly in the 2 bays to right and has 12-pane sashes, taller at ground floor;
arched entrance, immediately to right of the break, is sheltered by a heavy
stone canopy on Tuscan columns which is probably C19. Hipped roof has C19
triangular roof dormers. Left end wall has a large canted bay window below a
pair of 4-pane sashes with flush limestone architraves and double-stepped
keyblocks; left face of the rear wing has similar windows above a tripartite
sash, and rear wall of the wing has a tripartite sash above a further bay
window. A subsidiary rear wing returns from the right end of the main range.
Intrior: mostly C20 but drawing room is intact with a painted plaster frieze.
Single-storey C20 ranges to rear are not of special architectural interest.
