WALL)

House. Mid/late Cl7. English garden wall bond brick with
slate roof. Baffle-entry plan with 2 rooms wide, 2 deep and
2 storeys. Twin-gabled 2-bay elevation with door to right
below segmental-arched head. Raised lozenge band at first
floor level. Two 3-light casement windows on each floor with
segmental brick arches. Chimney stacks to right and left
returns which retain original horizontally sliding sash
windows. The right return has a deep stone plinth. It is
partly obscured by a later lean-to addition. Interior:
massive ovolo-moulded ceiling beams and bressumer beam over
inglenook fireplace; all have unusual raised broach stops. A
large plasterwork panel in the principal room is based on a
bush bearing various fruits, acorns, etc. all in deep relief
probably dating from early C17. Of a similar date is a first
floor panelled partition and cupboards. Staircase with
heavy turned balusters, closed string and square newels.
Evidence would suggest that the structure is a rebuilding of
an earlier house parts of which survive or have been reused.
A contemporary garden wall with round-topped coping stones
adjoins the front of the house.
