Man made ornamental cave. c1870, restored late C20. Made for
Alderman Thomas Herbert. The cave is cut in a natural rock
face. Round-arched doorway flanked to left by an unglazed
opening, both round-arched. To right, regular rows of small
niches cut in the rock face. The doorway gives access to a
round-arched tunnel with a renewed brick staircase, leading to
an upper terrace.
This cave and others nearby were originally garden features in
the grounds of Herbert's house in the Ropewalk (not included).
Overlying buildings are not of special interest.
