Man-made ornamental cave. c1870. Made for Alderman Thomas
Herbert. Rectangular cave approx 13m x 7m, and 3m high, open
at the west end. The roof is carried on 3 rows of 6 square
rock columns with relief panels and capitals. One column
replaced in brick. The walls are divided by similar
half-columns, and between them, bas relief figures and
crucifixes. The existing cave is under Park Terrace. An
adjoining cave to the east was filled in during 1976.
This cave and others nearby were built as garden features in
the grounds of Herbert's house in the Ropewalk (not included).
Overlying buildings are not of special interest.
