Terrace of 6 shops and offices. c1875. Ashlar; slate roof with
ashlar stacks. 3 storeys with attic; 9-window range. Ground
floor has inserted shop fronts, mostly C20, between angle
pilasters with anthemion capitals (some missing) and dentilled
cornice; 1st floor has panelled plinth and enriched frieze;
top deep frieze with incised panels over windows and dentilled
cornice. The Posada has original front with small-paned bowed
window between recessed entrances with half-glazed doors; tile
decoration and name panels; No 44 (H. Blackham) retains early
C20 front with barometer in arch over recessed glazed door and
window; entrance to upper floors to right has consoled
segmental pediment and overlight. 1st floor has architraved
tripartite windows with keystones and horned sashes, but 1st,
5th and 8th windows are paired; 2nd floor has windows with
pilasters, enriched friezes and 4-pane horned sashes, but 1st,
5th and 8th are tripartite with flanking panels; attic has
hipped dormers with glazed sides, but 1st and 8th are
pedimented with flanking scrolls, cornice below breaking
forward to either side; 4th and 5th dormers missing. INTERIOR:
The Posada retains original bar fittings, panelling and seats;
No 44 has panelled screen with glazing, doors and broken
pediment; tiled passage to stair. Rear utilitarian. Built as
part of redevelopment of Lichfield Street.
