1/57 Foulds House Farmhouse
1.4.1953
GV II

Farmhouse, dated 1677 on porch. Coursed sandstone blocks and rubble with
quoins, stone slate roof with moulded coping and kneelers at left gable, large
external chimney stack at the same gable and gable chimney at right end. Two
bays (2nd bay possibly a later addition), with projecting porch in centre,
short rear extension to 2nd bay incorporating staircase. Two storeys;
2-storey porch with kneelers has wide chamfered doorway (the lintel undercut
on the inner side to make a shallow Tudor arch), a 2-light double-chamfered
window with hoodmould at 1st floor and beneath this a recessed datestone with
moulded surround and raised lettering "HW:IW ; to the left the 1st bay has a
AN:1677"
similar window on each floor, divided respectively by king mullions into 3 + 3
and 4 + 2 lights. Gable end of this part has large external chimney with
offsets, to the rear of this a square recessed 2-light window lacking the
mullion and above a round-headed light lengthened downwards. The bay to the
right of the porch appears to have been added or altered, is built of less
regular masonry, has 3 inserted windows, and in the angle with the porch a
doorway incorporating old jambstones and a lintel with crude dog-toothing
pattern incised. Interior: 1st bay has beams with cyma-stopped small chamfer,
supported on stone corbels; large stone arched fireplace now concealed.
