8/131 The Old Rectory
GV II
Former rectory, detached house. Probably mid/late C18, restored
and altered in late C20. Ashlar west front on plinth on random
coursed rubble core with quoins to rear, flat metalled roof unseen
behind parapet wall, stone end stacks with parapet swept up.
Square 2-storey range with single storey rear wing probably of C19,
with stone slate roof. Entrance on north side with projecting C20
pedimented ashlar porch and door of 6 fielded panels, Palladian
motif above has central niche and may be of C20. Main front to
west has two 2-storey canted bays with three 12-pane sashes each,
and central 12-pane sash with half-glazed door below with transom
light, up 2 stone steps. Plat bands above both window levels.
Right hand return has 12 and 16-pane sashes in plain reveals and
one blocked and one new plain stone doorway. Large Palladian
window on rendered rear wall lights stairway and hall which has
stone flag floor and fine cantilevered moulded stone staircase with
wreathed and ramped handrail on iron balustrade. Much internal
joinery remains and some plasterwork, in particular on first floor
above hall.
