BRAMFORD
THE STREET
Spar Food Store (Formerly listed as Shop Premises and three adjoining properties approximately 35 yards South East of the Almshouses on the West Side of the Road)
II
Shop, formerly terrace of cottages. Probably built as one house, in 2 stages:
a jettied cross-wing to right of late C14 or early C15; and an open hall with
storeyed bay to left of late C15 or early C16. Timber-framed and plastered.
Plaintiled roofs. C19 small-pane casements; beneath the jetty is a canted bay
shop window. Mid C20 wooden shop-front with glazed doors. The cross wing has
fairly complete framing from 1st floor upwards, but roof renewed C19; walling
at upper level has widely-spaced tension-braced studwork. The hall range has
similar wall-framing, depleted but with remains of smoke-blackened plain
crown-pose roof which was almost rebuilt in C19. Major alterations to ground
storey including flat-roofed rear extension, c.1970.
