Public house. Core probably of C16 with major alterations of several periods.
1 storey and attics. Timber-framed and plastered, largely underbuilt and
encased in late C18 or early C19 brickwork, now painted. Plaintiled roof;
gabled C19 plaintiled dormers with casements. Axial C19 chimney of red brick.
3-light casements of C18 or early C19 with transomes and hinged boarded
shutters. C19 boarded entrance door. The right hand section has an altered
C16 core; a closed truss visible within the bar is tension-braced and was
originally external. An open truss with arch-braced tie-beam, now visible in
a 1st floor partition, may be the central truss of an open hall. In C17 or
early C18 an upper floor was inserted and a further cell with axial chimney
was added to left. Smoke-encrusted rafters from the open hall roof are reused
in the C17/C18 rebuilding. The lean-to extension at front right was added
C19, probably as a butcher's shop.
