Stained glass, 1961 To William Arthur and Hylda Sophie Paget Tilney. In the head of the window is their Arms, Argent a chevron between three griifins heads erased gules (for Tilney) impaling Argent between two scallops sable a cross engrailed fretty of sable and argent (for Paget). -The Vision of St Hubert- As well as the medieval Huberts ecstatic, blinding, vision of Christ crucified, on meeting a stag, we have a hunting scene with Sutton Bonington Hall, the River Soar and St Michaels Church spire. The fox and the hound represent sport hunting in the Shires: popular when the Hall was built and well into the C20. A modern neurologist might interpret the vision as an acute migraine attack, triggered by the shape and glint of the antlers. Even so, another, spiritual, aspect to such visions is the reaching outside oneself in crisis. You may wish to visit the St Hubert Society website for more of his story. (Photo May 2008).
