Masonic Temple

GV II

Masonic temple, originally dwelling. c1845, but remodelled on
change of use. By Walter Scott. Ashlar-faced, roof not seen
behind parapet. 2 storeys, 4 symmetrical bays divided by
full-height pilasters with egg-and-dart capitals. Side
entrance up steps in projecting hipped roofed lean-to porch.
Heavy plain architrave to doorway. 4 renewed wood mullioned
and transomed windows to lower storey. Principal storey at
first floor level has windows in moulded architraves with
scrolls each side of keyblock. Heavy modillion cornice over
with panelled parapet and urn finials at angles above. 2
conical metal vents in roof, and rear wall stacks. The house
formed part of the original development of Clifton Park, laid
out by Scott as a villa estate.
