GV II

Anglican church, for Peel parish. 1828. By Philip Sambell,
altered 1893-1900. Granite ashlar to west street elevation,
otherwise local stone rubble with freestone, granite and brick
dressings; dry Delabole slate roof hipped at the west end;
cast-iron ogee gutters. Rectangular aisleless plan with
apsidal chancel. Symmetrical 3-bay west front has corner
pilasters and parapet with projecting central bay surmounted
by a cupola on 6 slender wooden Tuscan columns; central rose
window over bowed porch projection with blind arcade of 5
round arches and moulded parapet; flanking bays are blind.
There is a round-arched doorway in each of the returns of the
central bay and a truncated rose window above. Adjoining on
the left is a C15 or C16 four-centred-arched doorway with
square hoodmould. INTERIOR not inspected but has a gallery on
painted columns (Pevsner). SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: original iron
railings have spear-headed shafts and turned stanchions.
