House. C16, rear wing probably rebuilt in early C17. Stucco,
said to be over cob; slate roof with crested ridge; central
ridge stack. 3-room cross-passage plan, with rear wing to
right.
2 storeys, 4-window range. 6-panel door to right of centre,
all windows have forward frames and C19 two/two-pane sashes.
INTERIOR: cross-passage now lined with C19 tongued-and-grooved
panelling. Room to left has fireplace backing onto passage,
(stud partition removed). C20 stairs now positioned against
left-hand wall. Room to right has Tudor-arched fireplace in
rear right corner and repositioned stair in rear left-corner
blocking Tudor-arched doorway to passage; 3 jointed cruck
trusses with trenched purlins.
Rear wing has fireplace backing onto central room. Room above
has fireplace in same position with fleur-de-lys in raised
plasterwork above. C20 partitioned passage leads to room to
rear of rear wing. This has 2 reset jointed cruck trusses with
tenoned and trenched purlins and mortices for arch bracing.
The roof originally continued into Nos 58 and 60 (qv), the
lack of smoke-blackening suggesting a C16 rather than late
medieval date; the roof was probably originally open from the
first floor.
