House, now offices. Late C16, remodelled in mid C19.
Roughcast; crested slate roof with stone coping and moulded
kneelers to main building; brick stacks with stone cornices.
3-unit through-passage plan with C19 forward extensions to
left and right; that to the right, No.23, is now a separate
dwelling called Wing House (qv).
The left forward extension is single-storey with a separate
hipped roof; stone coping to a parapet which sweeps up to the
eaves of the main building, and clasped pilasters with
recessed panels to the corners; C19 tripartite sash and a
pedimented doorcase with pilasters and panelled reveals, face
the central courtyard.
The central block runs behind the length of the left
extension. The remainder of the exposed facade of the central
block is now symmetrical 3-window range with an inserted door
to the far right; this leads to a C19 rear extension, now
another property. All windows are C19 and have label moulds;
the first-floor centre is a margin-pane sash, all others are
tripartite with consoles to the tops of the mullions; those on
the ground floor are wider. A Tuscan doorcase projects into
the flagged courtyard.
INTERIOR: retains some original timbers including
stop-chamfered cross-beams; most of the the doors are early
C19 six-panel. The central hall is stone-flagged; an early C19
staircase with a mahogany handrail wreathed round a turned
newel is to the rear right; a beam rests on the lintel of the
tripartite window to the front. The room to the right has a
similar beam and parts of a studded screen against the
through-passage; to the rear end is a low Tudor arch; to the
right rear corner more studding is exposed. The room to the
left is of c1840 character, retaining its cornice, dado-rail
and skirting boards; a black marble fire-surround, French
windows with circular, semi-circular and margin panes and
working double-folding shutters.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: C19 railings with foliate tops front the
courtyard, the central double gates have a diamond-shaped
frieze to the base.
