Large Victorian mansion. 1864. Architect William Beck. For
William Tuke, local banker. Red brick, stone dressings, slate
roof, irregular plan. 2 storeys and attics. House in high
Victorian Gothic style with polychrome decoration, projecting
gables, one and 1 storey bay windows, gable dormers and stair
turret. Detailing to corbelled brick eaves and windows in
Venetian Gothic style. Range of window forms of 1 and 4
lights, with combination of 2-centre arched heads (and square
heads); colonnette mullions and mullions and transoms, some
with trefoiled tracery and head moulds.
INTERIOR: virtually unaltered with principal rooms opening off
E facing hall. Hall constructed in ashlar (now painted); stone
fireplace with deep canopy; quarter turn timber staircase with
carved splat and quatre-foil infill tracery; Venetian gallery
at first floor with marble columns, acanthus leaf capitals
supporting 2-centred arches with moulded soffits. Carved stone
cornice with carved corbels supporting carved timber bridging
joists. Timber panelled ceiling. Full height 4-light E window,
stone, with 3 mullions and transom, and trefoiled heads;
leaded quarries with colour glass margin lights and roundels.
Drawing room has 4-light window, formerly possibly unglazed,
opening into conservatory (now demolished) with serpentine
colonnettes and carved stone capitals, spandrels and cornice.
Carved stone fireplace with panel containing figures above
mantel; softwood timber cornices to ceiling and windows and
moulded timber panel ceiling. All other rooms retain original
detail, including purpose-designed fireplaces, some with Dutch
tiles, softwood 6 panelled doors with chamfered rails and
stiles and timber panelled ceilings.
