Large 11 bayed barn. C18. Timber-framed and weatherboarded,
brick plinth, peg tile, slate and corrugated asbestos roof. L
shaped plan of principal aisled NW-SE range with wing at N end
to NW. SW elevation (towards front yard): SE end, peg tile
roofed and showing site of 2 large waggon doorways, one has
C20 weatherboarded replacement doors, other now infilled and
weatherboarded with one small ground floor door, one upper
loading door and second loading door under eaves, all boarded.
NW end of range, roof slated and brought down over aisle, half
of which has high brick plinth with loading door above. Other
half open, arcaded with curved braces. NE elevation: to rear
yard, principal range, SW end corrugated asbestos cement roof,
continuous louvred vents under eaves, one ground floor and 3
upper boarded loading doors. NW end, full-height open bay with
gabled loft above, loading door in gable. Wing at NW end to NE
slated roof, 2 open arcaded bays continuing round NE end,
narrow weatherboarded wall above with 2 boarded loading doors.
SE end elevation: plain except for high boarded loading door,
flatter roof pitch on NE side over internal aisle. NW end
elevation: gable end of principal range with side wall of wing
to NE. Slate roofs. Whole elevation on brick walling with
flint cobble panels. Walling under wing, dentilled with 2
battered brick buttresses. Wing construction probably
secondary to this boundary wall. Boarded loading doors, one in
gable end, 3 in wing.
INTERIOR: mainly C18 but elegant, with slender unjowled arcade
posts and small curved arcade braces, also knee braces, very
high side aisles. Roof partly of joggled butt side purlin
type. Some trapped by collars, slender rafters. Most walling
of primary braced construction. NE wall of main range of
heavier construction with jowled posts and joints for internal
tension bracing, also diamond mullion holes and shutter
grooves for upper windows. 4 construction phases, probably
(1), late C16 walling. (2) 6 SE bays, still with (now
internal) weatherboarded NW end (3) 5 NW bays (4) NE arcaded
wing, rear wall sat upon older existing wall. Scarf jointing
is very irregular with some joints normally expected in a
medieval context.
