Tall commemorative column, approx 17m high. Erected in 1774 by
Sir John Griffin Griffin and said to have been designed by
Robert Adam in 1763 for Capability Brown's newly landscaped
park. Fine limestone Tuscan column on a tall oolitic limestone
rectangular base, surmounted by an egg-shaped, lidded urn with
gadrooned body. NE face of base carries inscription on a large
marble plaque (now badly weathered) recording its erection in
gratitude to Elizabeth, Countess of Portsmouth by her heir and
nephew.
