Translation: Here lie Sir William Villiers and his wives Johanna and Agnes, which said William died the --- day in the month of --- in the Year of our Lord (AD) One thousand four hundred and eighty and the same Johanna died the twenty seventh day in the month of April AD one thousand four hundred and seventy five and Agnes died AD one thousand four hundred and --- upon whose souls may god have mercy Amen-. The three shields across the top, 1) Per pale gules and azure a lion rampant argent (Beler), 2) Quarterly 1 and 4 Sable, a fess between three cinquefoils argent (Villiers ancient), 2, Argent, on a cross gules five escallops or, (Villiers modern), 3, Three martlets (?or on sable, intended for Pakeman). 3) Gules six lions rampant between ten cinquefoils argent (Agnes family). The four small figures are the children of William and Joan: John and Bartholomew, Elizabeth and Helen. The illustration in Nichols (1795) vol iii p193 plate, is actually a reproduction of a painting of it in the Villiers pedigree (ibid p196): their text has inverted so it runs in the opposite direction, Sir William shown with a beard and his ladies in different costumes, etc. (Photo Jun 2015).
