Jutland Memorial. In a central oval, supported by dolphins, and surmounted by an earls coronet: In memory of our friends Officers and Men who died gloriously for their king and country during the Battle of Jutland on 31st May 1916. -They that go down to the sea in ships that do business in great waters, these see the works of the Lord and His wonders in the deep. Psalm 107-. On either side, between Tuscan columns with Ionic capitals, are listed the lost admirals, captains, and their ships: HMS Defence, HMS Invincible, HMS Indefatigable, HMS Queen Mary, HMS Black Prince and HMS Tipperary. In the broken pediment is a shield: Azure a beehive an orle of 9 bees volant or, in chief argent a cross gules (Beatty). Crest: An earls coronet, a nobles helmet and a wreath out of which a lion rampant. Supporters Dexter a sailor, Sinister a Royal marine (damaged- his left arm no longer grasps the stock of his carbine). Motto No vi sed arte (Not by force but by art). At the foot is a laurel wreath with crossed swords, cannon and standards. (Photo Jun 2015).
