Church. 1822 by Henry Poole. Ashlar, slate roof with gables coped
in saddle-back copings. Octagonal with cruciform single storey
wings formed by sanctuary, north and south transepts, and 3 stage
tower to west. The single storey wings have stepped diagonal
buttresses surmounted by pinnacles. West tower has embattled
parapet with stepped diagonal buttresses surmounted by pinnacles
and additional pinnacle in centre on each side of parapet. Single
lancets on first and second stage, clock faces on 2nd stage to
south, west and north, double lancet belfry stage - all lancets
with pointed hood moulds. Windows are 2 and 3-light Y tracery
lancets.
Interior - simple lancet panelled galleries in transepts and as
organ loft in west with elaborate Gothick organ. Similar style
pulpit, and elaborate wooden reredos with pinnacles and monogram
"IHS" in open tracery rose in central gable. Ridge and diagonal
ribs form 12-rib vault rising to central boss. Poole also designed
towers at Christchurch (q.v.) and Market Place, Coleford (q.v. -
tower only remaining).
