House, now 2. First half of C16 2-bays house (one an open hall), late
C16 jettied E part (No. 9), later C17 W end part and large chimney with
floor in hall and stair beside stack. Timber frame with red brick infill
and steep red tiled roofs half-hipped at W end. A long 2-storeys block
facing N with E part slightly higher. No. 8 has irregular fenestration
with 3 windows to each floor and gabled porch to door on E side of
central windows. Flush sliding Yorkshire casements with lattice leaded
glazing. Small stair window in line with internal stack one third from W
end. No. 9 has continuous side-jetty, one 4-light window to each floor
and 3-light window over baffle entrance beside large chimney near E end.
Medieval middle part has heavy timbers, heavy flat joists to the
storeyed E bay, reverse-curved braces to upper part of front wall,
original framed partition with curved tension brace (concealed from
hall.), swept-jowled posts, and clasped purlin roof structure with
wind-braces. Timbers of large scantling, squarish in section. Poor plain
joists in floor over hall but well finished chamfered joists with
run-out stops to W end extension. (RCHM Typescript).
