GREAT GADDESDEN ST. MARGARET'S
TL 01 SW
(West side)
3/126 No. 5
(St. Margaret's House)
GV II
House. Early C18, converted to 2 houses in C19, united and S wing added
c.1980. Red brick with steep old red tile roof. Some timber framing in N
gable. A small 2-storeys house of 2 structural bays, facing E, with rear
outshut, end chimneys, and 2 storeys gabled S wing projecting to front.
The wing has a casement window on each floor. The main house has
segmental arches to all windows, 3 1st floor casement windows of 2:1:2
lights. 2 2-light windows to ground floor and formerly 2 doors between
them. RH door now a window: LH door in use with C18 raised and fielded
4-panel door under small gabled porch. The offset plinth continues
inside the rear outshut which probably is not original. The interior has
exposed joists on both floors indicating former attics above. Axial
beams above ground floor: cross beams above 1st floor. Inserted stair in
LH part cuts through chamfer of axial beam showing it is not original.
Clasped-purlin 2-bays roof structure with inclined straight queen-posts
to central truss (without collar) and straight wind-braces to the
purlins of large scantling. Formerly numbered 5, and 6.
