Railway Station with train shed. Circa 1861 for the coastguard extension of
the Stockton and Darlington Railway. Red brick in flemish band with yellow
brick and ashlar dressings; Welsh slate roof, the central portion of train shed
glazed; later glazed front porch.
Main building 2 storeys, 7 bays, the 3 central bays recessed; and set-back
1-storey side wings. Round-arcaded ground floor has gauged-brick arched to
windows; hoodmoulds continuous with impost string. Upper windows similar bull
segment-headed. Cill bounds to both floors. Projecting added central porch
with part-glazed hipped roof and ornamental eaves. Main roof low-pitched and
hipped, with deep eaves on paired wood brackets. 4 stacks with plinths and
cornices, 2 on ridge and 2 at ends. Similar treatment to side wings. Platform
elevation has segmental-arched ground floor with open centre on 2 cast iron
columns. All windows are C20 replacement but original 4-panel doors remain.
Train shed covers platform and adjoining line and is of l-storey height with
string at first-floor level and eaves band below moulded cornice. Hipped roof,
of lightweight jointed iron internal construction, rests on patterned cast iron
brackets on station side.
Included for historical interest as the only station in Cleveland which retains
its original train shed.
