(north side)
10/219 St. John's House
II
Large town house. Probably early/mid C18, largely reworked on
interior in early C19. Coursed rubble stone with quoins on plinth,
stone slate roof with stone end stacks with brick flues and moulded
wood eaves cornice. Inner slopes of roofs in concrete tiles.
Double range, 2 storeys and attic. Four windows, 12-pane sashes in
plain stone frames with wider central gap. Ground floor has 4
similar and door slightly to left of centre with semi-circular
voussoirs showing behind wooden open pediment on thin fluted
pilasters and broken entablature with paterae, semi-circular soffit
with plain fanlight and door, probably by Richard Pace, of 6
elaborate flush panels, in 3 different pairs.
Interior has very fine early C19 joinery, much of which is however
ill-fitting. Shell niche (one of a former pair) in panelled room to
left on ground floor, wide depressed arch in centre of hall, stick
baluster stair with wreathed handrail to rear of wide central hall.
Two former cottages to the left of the house were converted c1906
into a doctor's surgery which then had access into St John's House;
access is now sealed and separate house, Westcot, is not of special
interest.
