Description

TL 61 SW HIGH EASTER THE STREET
(north side)

3/51 High Easterbury

GV II*

House. C13, C14, C16 and possibly earlier. Timber framed and plastered with
peg tile roofs. Of 2 storeys and of complex plan form. The front shows a long
range with a hipped west end and a gabled crosswing at the east. Beyond this is
a single storey peg tile roofed and gabled block. The rear has two 2 storey
hipped roofed blocks and 2 lean-to outshots one with a pantile roof. There are
2 concertina brick stacks, one through the roof of the single storey east block
and one against the rear wall of the main range. The front has 4 double hung
sash windows with square panes and moulded surrounds on the first floor. The
ground floor windows are small pane casements and there is a lean-to
conservatory against the west end of this facade. The west end wall has 2
pointed arched leaded light casements of Gothick character. Attached to the
rear wall is a timber cased yard pump with lead spout. One post of a former
aisled hall is visible with a passing brace socket. The west end seems to
incorporate the remains of a C13 or C14 solar, with heavy centre tennoned floor
joists and large post with 2 shaped knee-like braces. A timber at the north
west corner has a secret notched lap mortice. The east crosswing is late C16.
3 C16/C17 moulded doors remain and a solid tread staircase now leading to an
attic. The main roof has framed side purlins and is of the C17. Moated site.
RCHM 16.
