Milepost. Late C18 . re-erected mid-C20. Rectangular painted stone post, with inset panel carrying an inscription which gives the distances to settlements on the route of the Preston to Liverpool turnpike from this location in Much Hoole parish. The inscription reads ' LIVERPOOL 24 ORMSKIRK 11 PRESTON 7 Much Hoole' The Preston to Liverpool turnpike was established in the late C18, and this milestone is believed to be the sole surviving example which retains its distance inscription.
