Pair of cottages, now one. Probably late C17 to C18 with later additions
and alterations. Timber-frame with plaster, wattle-and-daub and brick
infill. Weatherboards. Thatched roof with extruded cylindrical sandstone
rubble bread oven and stack to each gable. Stacks have brick shafts.
Three main structural bays aligned west-south-west/east-north-east and late
C19 extension at east end. One storey and attic. South elevation has two
windows, 2-light mid-C20 casements under eyebrows. Ground floor has three
small mid-C20 windows to left and one 3-light wrought iron late C18 to early
C19 casement to right of centre. Two entries, one to left of centre, the
other to right-hand side, both with late C20 doors. To the right of the
right-hand entry are two one-light windows. Extreme right-hand side has
weatherboarded extension under thatch. Interior has several ledged late
C17 or C18 doors. One segmental headed chamfered doorhead. Trusses have
queen struts except the eastern one which has plain collar. The Thatched
Cottage was formerly known as Buona Ventura (RCHM, Vol III, p 3).
