Disagreeable characters were used as gargoyles to show the fate of non-church-goers or of their souls. St Marys has a pair of unsavoury louts that no respectable neighbourhood would wish to see- the drunken sexton with his bells at all hours, pictured earlier, and here, in his faded finery, physic-jug and medicine bag, the pox doctors clerk.
