Palace Block from Crown Square

Uploader's Comments

The palace, which began as an extension to David's Tower in the reign of James I, was developed as a royal lodging under James IV in the 15th century. It was the royal residence of the Stewart kings, and the royal arms and ciphers appear in several places. A stone with the monogram MAH for Mary, Queen of Scots, and her husband, Henry Lord Darnley, can be seen above one of the entrances. In 1566 the Queen gave birth to the future King James VI in a small cabinet off the Queen's Chamber, later called 'the Mary Room'. The palace was last used by a reigning monarch when Charles I spent a night here before his Scottish coronation in 1633.
