Mid 19th century. 2 storeys over basement, 3-bay
asymmetrical villa, now an hotel, with later 19th century
single storey over basement wing extending to north.
Painted ashlar and dressings. Steps lead to central recessed
door set behind Roman Doric columned screen, pierced
parapet with cast-iron balustrade above linking advanced
outer bays. Tripartites in outer bays, canted on each
storey to right, pilastered to left, with entablature
above ground floor window; 1st floor lights round-headed.
Single 1st floor window in central bay. Continuous cornice
over ground floor and cill course to 1st floor. Main
cornice and parapet, balustraded over outer windows.
Symmetrically placed stacks. 3-window bowed extension to
left linked to original house by 2 bays; continuous string
course over basement and pierced parapet above ground
floor. Painted ashlar. Extension links to former rubble
-built outbuilding to north east, converted to
photographer's studio, 1876, with doorway added on Charles
Street, Honeyman and Keppie, architects.
Charles Street: projecting porch has round-headed recessed
door with cavetto reveals; channelled bull-faced ashlar
and voussoirs with massive projecting keystone: polished
ashlar below broad projecting eaves.
Interior of main block: some late 19th century decorative
cornices and plasterwork; Ionic columned screen in rear
hall supporting entablature with round arch above. Carved
roof timbers in former outhouse, now public bar, but these
concealed by modern ceiling.
