Erected 1808 for Sir Thomas Brisbane, Astronomer. 3
rubble-built square-plan meridian pillars, with droved,
squared rubble quoins, orientated roughly east-west and
situated on a motte. Central pillar capped by
pediment-shaped stone, flanking pillars each capped with
3 upright slabs in gun-sight arrangement.
Pillars face towards Brisbane Glen where Sir Thomas
Brisbane built an observatory, with which the pillars
relate after his return home in 1808. The sale of
Halkshill in 1815 includes the condition that no
building is to obscure these pillars.
Brass plate in latter pillar at foot of motte dated 1808.
