John Baxter of Portobello, circa 1825. 2-storey with basement to rear, 3-bay classical formerly terraced house, formerly part of mirrored pair with single sorey flanking pavilions (No 39 to SW demolished after 1896). Polished ashlar, deeply-channelled to ground, harled pavilion to NE, NE and SW elevations, square rendered to rear. Base course, band course between ground and 1st floor, cill course to 1st floor, cornice and blocking course; coping to pavilion.
NW (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: windows to each floor at every bay; deep-set panelled door to outer left , plate glass rectangular fanlight above, window at 1st floor. Window to pavilion.
SE (REAR) ELEVATION: boarded door to basement, outer right. Window to each floor, each bay, except blank, bay to left. Single storey addition to outer left and right.
Plate glass timber sash and case windows, except to pavilion (6-pane upper sash and plate to lower sash). M-gabled grey slated roof with ashlar wallhead stack to NE, SE elevation; rendered stack formerly mutual.
INTERIOR: not seen, 1994.
BOUNDARY WALL: droved ashlar with coping.
