W T Oldrieve. Built 1904-8. Observatory office and
laboratory. 2-storeys, basement to E above slope. Arts and Crafts movement, gables with skews run horizontally over eaves. Roughly Roughly-coursed and squared whinstone with long and short worked dressings and quoins, most windows segmentally-arched with
contrasting voussoirs. Basically H-plan; long 5-bay inner range
has Westmost bay carried upwards above main roof level and has full-depth viewing platform, lean-to porch at foot to both
elevations. Shaped gutter brackets; slate roofs.
INTERIOR: many important and early scientific instruments,
several still in use; timber stairs have battered newels with
projecting caps; upper hall in inner range with exposed
plain timber roof.
Instruments include a fortin barometer, a float barograph
and a synchronome.
