Curvilinear Glasshouse in kitchen garden at Downton Castle

Glasshouse. Circa 1820; by Thomas Andrew Knight; cast by Messrs W. and D. Bailey of London. Cast-iron curved profile glasshouse with coped rendered brick rear and end walls and overlapping panes of glass. Rectangular on plan with doorway in left end and high level door in right end. The glasshouse is situated in the kitchen garden at Downton Castle. Thomas Andrew Knight was the second president of the [Royal] Horticultural Society of London and this glasshouse was built for his experiments in protected cultivation.
