Orangery. Mid-C19 or earlier, with mid-C20 alterations. Part sandstone
rubble, part sandstone ashlar with corrugated metal roof. Rectangular plan
aligned east/west with canted projection at centre of rear elevation. Single
storey. North wall built of rubble, south and side walls are colonnaded to
form a loggia of six bays with a central entrance to the south and of two
bays at the sides. The colonnades have ashlar columns with entasis (but no
true capitals or bases) on a chamfered ashlar base with chamfered timber
lintels. The roof is concealed behind an ashlar parapet with ball finials
above each column. The orangery faces the present main entrance to Downton
Castle (qv).
