Gazebo. Late C18 and probably by Richard Payne Knight, altered mid-C19.
Sandstone ashlar with roof concealed behind embattled parapet above prominent
corbel tabled Square plan. Three stages with strings. Picturesque style.
There is a blind pointed archway containing a blind lancet and, above it, a
blind quatrefoil pierced with a circular opening in the south, east and west
sides of the lower stage; there is also another pointed archway in the west
elevation leading to a semi-circular recess. The main entrance is in the
north elevation and has a pointed doorway with a traceried head. The blind
pointed arched openings are repeated on the north and east sides of the second
stage. The second stage of the west elevation has a 5-light mullioned window
with moulded sill and hoodmould overlooking the south terrace of Downton Castle
(qv) and there is a blocked pointed chamfered archway in the south elevation.
On the third stage there is an oriel window on three corbels with a lean-to
roof and flanked by blind lancets in the south elevation. The remaining
elevations have blind circular openings with moulded surrounds flanked by
blind lancets. The gazebo is situated at the east end of the south terrace
forming part of the original composition of the main entrance front. (Country
