Retaining wall about 75 yards south of Downton Castle

Retaining wall. Late C18. Coursed sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings.
About ten feet high and about 300 yards long and having pinnacled buttresses
with offsets at about ten yard intervals along its length. It begins to the
north-east of the south terrace wall (qv) and inscribes an arc with a straight
100 yard stretch running south-west at its south-west end. The retaining wall
was designed to make an important structural and aesthetic contribution to the
construction of the south terrace.
