Villa. 1828-9. For Richard Ware, nurseryman and florist, for
his own residence. Stucco over brick with concealed roof,
stucco end and party-wall stacks.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys on basement, 3+4 first-floor windows,
those 3 to left in full-height canted bay; and with
single-storey range at left. Stucco detailing includes
first-floor band, frieze, cornice and blocking course with
copings. 2/2 horizontal-pane sashes to canted bay, otherwise
6/6 sashes to ground and first floors, all in plain reveals
and with sills. Basement has 2/2 and 8/8 sashes. Central
entrance, 4 steps to porch with double, part-glazed doors with
overlight and tent roof, within a 5-panel door.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Ware created a Botanic Garden on the site
with conservatory, hothouses and greenhouses. He had also been
given chief responsibility for laying out the pleasure
grounds, walls and rides at Pittville. The house was known
originally as Victoria House.
Built as part of the development of this area undertaken for
Joseph Pitt in 1825-42, the general layout being designed by
the architect John Forbes.
All the listed buildings in Wellington Square form a good
group, laid out around a central grassed area.
