Pair of semi-detached villas and attached railings. 1835-6.
Ashlar over brick with concealed roof, stuccoed party-wall
stack and iron railings and balconies.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with basement, 6 first-floor windows
(3:3). Double depth plan with outer hallways. Ashlar detailing
includes ground-floor band, surmounted by Doric pilasters to
either side of door and to party-wall, moulded first-floor
band, surmounted by similar outer and party-wall pilasters,
crowning entablature and blocking course. Tooled architraves
to windows throughout, those to first floor have corbel
brackets with sill between. 6/6 sashes to ground and first
floors, all in plain reveals. Basement has 4/8 sashes. Flights
of roll-edged steps to outer entrances, basket-arched openings
with pilasters to responds and within are recessed 5-panel
doors with sidelights and overlights with margin-lights.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: stick railings to sides of steps, area
arrowhead railings. Ground floor has individual balconies with
scrolled heart motif.
HISTORICAL NOTE: built as part of the development of this area
undertaken for Joseph Pitt in 1825-42, the general layout
being designed by the architect John Forbes. All the listed
buildings in Wellington Square form a good group, laid out
around a central grassed area.
