Irregular terrace of 12 houses and attached railings. Laid out
c1827 for Joseph Hughes. Ashlar and stucco, over brick with
slate and mock-slate roofs; brick and stucco party-wall
stacks. Double depth plan with transverse dogleg staircase,
No.18 has full-height service range to rear.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with basements, all except Nos 18-24 have
attics to rear, 35-first-floor window range (2 to No.28,
otherwise 3 per house). 6/6 sashes throughout (except Nos 14
and 30 have 2 x 1/1 sashes to ground floor), all in plain
reveals and with sills; Nos 10 and 22 have some blind
openings; No.8 has blind boxes; No.28 has floating cornice to
ground floor. Entrances to left: flights of steps (mainly
roll-edged) to mainly 6-panel doors mainly with fanlights with
batwing-and-circle type glazing-bars where original, in
round-arched reveals, except No.28 has overlight; No.18 has
Ionic pilastered surround and broken pediment. Detailing
includes: 3 continuous incised first-floor bands except to Nos
6 and 28; end pilasters with decorative capitals; continuous
frieze and cornice, blocking course; No.30 has balustrade
surmounted by urns. Rear has 8/8, 6/6 and 3/6 sashes where
original; Nos 12, 20 and 26 have tall staircase window with
margin-lights. Rear retains 8/8, 6/6 and 3/6 sashes where
original.
INTERIOR: original joinery includes panelled shutters to some
windows, otherwise not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: area railings and to sides of steps have
bars and dog-bars, arrow- and spearheaded; some anthemion
finials.
Formerly the north side of Portland Square.
Abuts and forms a group with Nos 2, 4, and 6, Albert Place
(qqv) and Nos 35 and 37 Prestbury Road (qv).
